Homelessness teams are becoming more diverse in their duties since the introduction of the Homelessness Reduction Act, whether generically or through dedicated teams. Many staff don’t necessarily have the full knowledge of the work of the unit as a whole.
This course aims to provide that knowledge.
Modules covered on this course:
- History and overview of recent changes ot role of local authority
- When does a household officially become homeless and when should a council intervene?
- Prevention and relief duties explained.
- The 5 tests – Eligibility, homeless, priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection.
- How homelessness duties are discharged through the provision of temporary and permanent accommodation
- How decisions are made and notified. Applicants rights to reviews and appeals
Outcomes:
Participants will leave the course with a fully rounded knowledge of the work of the homelessness unit in a changing environment as well as understand the challenges faced by the local authority and what a customer can expect at different stages.
Who should attend?
This would not be suitable for experienced staff but is designed for people who may work in temporary accommodation, home visits, triage or even external agencies who have to work alongside homelessness units but who don’t necessarily know the full obligations, powers and duties.
